VESDA, or Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus, is an advanced aspirating smoke detection system. A network of aspirating pipes with multiple holes is threaded through protected areas of the facility and connected to VESDA detector units. The detectors constantly draw air through the pipes and into the detector unit.
Upon entering the VESDA detector unit’s chamber, the air samples are filtered for any dust and contaminants which might skew the result, before being subjected to a smoke detection laser. If the laser beam is scattered (a result of striking smoke particles in the sample of air), the VESDA system alarm is triggered, and signals are immediately sent to your central fire monitoring stations.
This system occurs passively in the background at all times, and has the capacity to detect fires just as they’re starting, before fire or even smoke is visible to the human eye. While a VESDA system should not be seen as a magic bullet for fire safety, it is an incredibly useful weapon in the arsenal of any safety-conscious owner of high density racking and storage.
